The history of the Piceno which is the region to the south
of Le Marche close to the border with Abruzzo, has its roots
deep in pre-history but with the appearance of the Piceni
people there are still evident traces of great movement and
social ferment. The many rediscovered settlement, villages
and cemeteries present throughout the territory are testimony
to the period as are the many finds of ancient jewelry and
precious artifacts. With the rise to power of the Romans from
around 500BC the Piceno region was subsumed into the Roman
Empire which, still influences living and lifestyle even today.
After the Roman period came the occupation by the Lombards
and then the Papacy. As an integral part of the Papal States
the region was heavily involved in the flourishing cultural
and artistic life of the Medieval and late Medieval period.
Also in the Piceno region are many traces of the influence
exerted by the Farfensi monks ( a Benedictine order) during
the period 800AD to 1200 AD.
Consequently
and as a testament to the vivacity and diversity of Piceno
culture there are many museums and galleries throughout the
area as there are in all Le Marche. These wonderful collections
showcase the ability and talent of the Marchigani throughout
the ages.
